Brielle
Early days in Brielle consisted of farm homesteads with sweeping water views and a modest shipping port on the Manasquan River called Union Landing. By the late 1800s, summer cottages and hotels were constructed at or near Union Landing. While vacationing on the river, Robert Louis Stevenson wrote a portion of his book “The Master of Ballantrae” and renamed Osborn Island “Treasure Island” after his earlier novel. This island located in the middle of the Manasquan River is officially named Nienstedt Island, honoring the family who donated it to the borough.
Today, the town of Brielle is composed of nearly 4 miles of water frontage including the Manasquan River, Debbie’s Creek and The Glimmer Glass. In addition to private pleasure crafts, there are over 200 commercial and charter fishing boats moored at Brielle marinas. These scenic harbors provide incredible open air dining, cocktails, and entertainment. Stroll down one of the docks to watch a large fish weigh-in or jump aboard a pontoon taxi and enjoy a cruise to other waterfront establishments.
Brielle’s business district continues down Union and Higgins Avenues where you can shop, dine, or take a voyage on the River Queen paddle boat. Brielle Day is a town wide event held every September on the 17-acre Brielle Park next to the Brielle Library. There are 150+ crafters, entertainment, music, fire truck rides, food, and a beer garden.
130-acres of Brielle land is occupied by the nationally renowned Manasquan River Golf Club, founded in 1922. This is a private club with 1,800 feet of waterfront property along the Manasquan River. Also set on the river and just a mile from the Atlantic Ocean, is the Manasquan River Yacht Club. This private club dates to 1899 and offers sailing, tennis, pool, and a clubhouse. A country setting surrounds these two clubs where you’ll discover stunning homes aside the banks of the Manasquan River.
